The old adage has always been "write what you know" and in `Sons of the Pope' it's obvious that Daniel O'Connor has done just that. There are two things that have always grabbed my attention, music and the mob; in the first novel offered by Daniel there are plenty of both.Rich character development has you rooting for some characters, jeering others, and actually leaves you feeling sorry for some. Where I grew up there certainly weren't a lot of "made men" but you always knew who had connections and who didn't. `Sons of the Pope' takes you inside the dark world of a NY family for decades. Flowing seamlessly from one Don to another, through generations of made men and hangers on.
The plot follows the journeys of two families in particular; the Salerno's and the Campigotto Family. It's through them that you get glimpses into worlds you never imagined. Through joy and tragedies the Salerno family is the backbone of the journey. Through them Daniel evokes strong emotions in the reader ranging from sorrow to triumph. It's also through them that you get a glimpse of the underworld. Sal Salerno never meant to be involved with that world, but circumstances beyond his control pulled him in. The Campigotto's are a different type of family: one that relies on intimidation and murder to achieve their goals. Yet even among these hardened characters there are glimpses of humanity and frailty, allowing the reader to connect to a world they'll never know.
It's also as you follow the journey of the Salerno's, among others, that you're reminded of music that you forgot about long ago. Joey is drawn to music in a way that you or I could never understand. With a particular love of the Beatles his story is intertwined like a beautiful counter melody among the most foreboding dirge. Joey is lightness and innocence in a world of darkness and death that through no fault of his own is thrust upon him time and again. Woven through the story are references to songs that set the scene beautifully. You can hear Glenn Miller coming over the scratchy airwaves, the unique sound that is a record being played on a turntable, the neighbor's radio playing too loudly on a summer night. It's the nuances that Daniel adds that make this such a richly rewarding read.
I am quite impressed with this first novel by Mr. O'Connor. It was a story that pulled me in and wouldn't allow me to stop reading until I saw how it all ended. I'm looking forward to the next offering by this promising author.

Sons of the Pope by Daniel O'Connor, is an Italian/American family saga set in Brooklyn New York just after World War II. Sal Salerno is a returning GI just starting his civilian life. We follow Sal's life as he falls in love, has a family, and is faced with difficult circumstances, and tough choices. Fate steps in and the Campigotto crime family makes him an offer. Sal's trepidation fades to reveal an inner strength. He knows who he is, knows his responsibility, and what he needs to do.
O'Connor's Brooklyn informs his characters as we follow them across four decades of history. The author's descriptions engage the five senses with subtle shades of feeling, tone, and color. I was drawn into an authentic time, place, and culture. The characters are truthful, frank, and real. There is a pureness to this story that resonates beyond the harsh backdrop of mob life.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sons of the Pope. I found myself completely absorbed as I laughed and cried. Daniel O'Connor is a talent. I recommend Sons of the Pope. I look forward to O'Connor's next book.

Full disclosure I was lucky enough to be gifted an advanced version of this book, though I have also purchased the paperback version from because it's THAT good!
Sons of the Pope is a touching slice of life drama set in Brooklyn that spans multiple generations of families - both related and organized. Sal Salerno comes home from World War II to find his cousin Vito running with a new crowd. It's not really Sal's scene, but he's close with Vito. Through a series of events and out of sheer need, Sal winds up in the extended famiglia.
All the characters are richly drawn yet all ring true, as does the sparkling dialogue. Dan O'Connor vividly describes not only Sal's Brooklyn neighborhood where most of the story takes place but he also takes us on a profound journey to Lourdes, France in search of a miracle for Sal's boy, Joey. Brutality is amply described in a few key scenes, but the real heart and soul of the story is the Salerno family. This book is also an ode to respect with the clear message that in order to earn it, you must first respect yourself.
If you grew up in Brooklyn, you'll feel right at home with Sons of the Pope. If you weren't lucky enough to grow up in such a dynamic, conflicted world, O'Connor invites you inside to tell you a great story and by the end, you'll feel like a part of the family.

Well done story, tracing its' characters over many years. Not as good as Puzo' s best, but a pretty good read.
Well written; excellent story line. Character development's deeper than you'd expect.
